Dr Cathal Berry TD spent 23 years in the Irish Defence Forces serving as an infantry officer and a medical officer. He has completed multiple tours of duty overseas in Africa, the Balkans and the Middle East, serving with the UN, NATO and the EU. He retired from the military in 2019 to run for public office and was elected as a TD for the Kildare South Constituency a few months later. He is currently a member of the Oireachtas Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee. He has been a vocal advocate for improving the welfare of both military personnel and their families, and for Ireland to start taking its defence and security seriously.
